Dear Public and Non-public School Contacts,
The School Health Program at the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) is pleased to share the report, Addressing the Eye Care Needs of Maryland Students: Findings from Statewide Vision Services Resource Mapping. This report contains the findings of a resource mapping project undertaken to identify assets, gaps, and limitations in vision services for Maryland students who fail school vision screening. In addition, the report outlines potential steps that can be taken by vision care stakeholders to improve access to vision care for Maryland students after school vision screening.
The School Health Program has also developed two caregiver-friendly informational flyers found here and here that can be used by local school health services programs to help educate caregivers about the importance of follow-up and receipt of a comprehensive eye examination if their child fails a school vision screening.
Lastly, the School Health Program is conducting a three-part webinar series to share resources and evidence-based and promising practices around school vision screening follow-up and access to vision care. The first webinar was conducted on November 20, 2025 and presented findings from the statewide vision services resource mapping, highlighted current successes and challenges in access to pediatric eye care after a failed vision screening, and explored perspectives on key policy, resource, and systems-level improvements. The second installment of this series, Maryland's Experience with School Based Vision Programs, will be conducted on December 11, 2025 from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. This webinar will provide evidence for school based vision programs, provide a brief overview of local school based vision program initiatives, and focus on effective implementation and the existing challenges of school-based vision programs. Those interested in attending may Register Here.
